LSU defensive end says he lost almost 30 pounds due to coronavirus

Travez Moore is urging people to take COVID-19 seriously and stay home.

Like several college football programs all over the country, LSU had a coronavirus outbreak this summer with at least 30 players being quarantined back in June because they tested positive for COVID-19 or they were in contact with someone who did, Sports Illustrated reported.

Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said in July that number was not accurate, but he acknowledged, via The Advocate: “[W]e did have a little spike. Now it’s going down. I think it’s under control.” The Baton Rouge newspaper also reported LSU’s coronavirus cases focused on a group of five to six players.

Whether or not Travez Moore was in that group is unknown, but the senior defensive end tweeted about his COVID-19 and symptoms Tuesday.

In an early-morning tweet, Moore urged people to take the coronavirus pandemic seriously, employing his own experiences to try to convince people to stay home. He said he lost 27 pounds because his appetite disappeared, and he’s had trouble breathing, making eating even more challenging.

Moore’s tweet comes two days after Pac-12 football players united with a set of demands for the conference, which include additional COVID-19 protocols, and threatened to opt out of the season if they’re not met. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who plays for Clemson in the ACC, also offered his support for the potential boycott.

Additionally, the SEC announced Thursday that it will have a 10-game, conference-only schedule this season set to begin September 26.

But that was a day after the conference had a meeting with more than a dozen SEC football players, commissioner Greg Sankey, other conference officials and its medical advisory board, and concerns about players’ health and safety were raised, The Washington Post reported after obtaining audio from the meeting. More from the report:

“There are going to be outbreaks,” one official told players on the call. (The official didn’t identify himself, and the SEC spokesman declined to identify him to The Post.) “We’re going to have positive cases on every single team in the SEC. That’s a given. And we can’t prevent it.”
