The unusual 2020 college football regular season is now in full swing, and as rumors swirl that the Big Ten could be about to announce its plans for a fall season, the SEC will kick off its schedule later this month.
Defending national champion LSU, ranked sixth in the preseason coaches poll, will play Mississippi State in a season-opener on September 26th, and coach Ed Orgeron will be without several key players who chose to opt out of the season.
Orgeron is hopeful that his active roster will be able to remain healthy and available amid the coronavirus pandemic – revealing on Tuesday that most of his players have already contracted the virus.
“Not all of our players, but most of our players have caught it. I think that hopefully they won’t catch it again, and hopefully they’re not out for games
Hopefully that once you catch it, you don’t get it again,” he said. “I’m not a doctor. I think they have that 90-day window, so most of the players that have caught it, we do feel like they’ll be eligible for games.”
LSU isn’t the only squad dealing with a huge number of positive tests. Since June, a total of 75 Texas Tech football players have tested positive, with six active cases as of Monday.
In the ACC, Virginia Tech was forced to halt football activities for four days and postpone a September 19th game against Virginia due to “COVID-19 issues.”
