LSU among three schools standing out to 2022 four-star defensive back

The LSU Tigers just signed a top-five recruiting class for 2021 despite finishing just 5-5 on the season.

After inking most of its class in the early signing period, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron made several coaching staff, most notably at offensive and defensive coordinator.

While the Tigers have yet to name new coordinators, they are still rolling on the recruiting trail.

LSU currently has the No. 2 class for 2022, with seven recruits already on board, and appear in great shape with several of its top targets.

One such player is four-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound safety from Ponchatoula High in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, hasn’t named any favorites in his recruitment just yet but is high on three schools, including the in-state Tigers.

“LSU, Mississippi State and Oklahoma,” Mathews told 247Sports via Andrew Ivins.

“Those three are showing me that they want me. They show me that I’m the top priority, but my recruitment is still open.”

LSU’s impending hire at defensive coordinator could play a role in Mathews’ decision. Still, one would expect the Tigers to remain the favorite in his recruitment due to their success at getting the state’s top players.

Mathews currently has no timeframe for a decision.
