The Indianapolis Colts are still building their roster hoping to have enough talent and depth to compete for the top spot in the AFC, which is no easy task considering the conference currently belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs.
With a new quarterback in Carson Wentz, the Colts feel a bit revitalized in that they feel they can be set up for the long haul—just ask T.Y. Hilton how his throwing session went.
While on ESPN’s Get Up, Louis Riddick said he believes the Colts are the biggest threat to the Chiefs in the AFC.
“But I think it’s going to be the Indianapolis Colts who provide the greatest challenge to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC because they have a lot of things going for them right now as far as culture in Indianapolis, as far as personnel in Indianapolis,” Riddick said on the ESPN program Wednesday.
Riddick cited the Colts’ culture and team-building philosophy as reasons why they can give the Chiefs a run for their money. But it also comes down to how quickly they can get Wentz back to form.
“Now the question is whether Frank Reich and one person in particular that being Carson Wentz can go ahead and be the cherry on top of this great program that they are putting together there. Because if he can get himself right mentally, they do provide him with the kind of structure and support but not enable him to circumvent the normal process by which a quarterback should go through in terms of being a leader of the organization.
But if they can get him on the right track, this team is very dangerous because they have a great team-building philosophy there and they already have a great locker room with a lot of good players. I think they are set up for the long haul,” said Riddick.
The optimism seems to be growing when it comes to Wentz’s prospects to turn things around with Reich. The two have a palpable chemistry that could work in their favor, but there are several issues that need to be worked out both mechanically and mentally before Wentz can be fully considered the quarterback of the future.
The Chiefs are looking to run it back after winning the Super Bowl two years ago and appearing in it last season, and it will be interesting to see how much of a threat the Colts will be in 2021.
