Chargers at Raiders: Game notes

  • The Chargers won against the Atlanta Falcons 20-17 in Week 14 to snap a two-game slide. PK Michael Badgley‘s 43-yard field goal as time expired sealed the victory as the Chargers covered as 1-point favorites. QB Justin Herbert completed 36 of 44 pass attempts for 243 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, and RB Austin Ekeler added 146 total yards (79 rushing, 67 receiving). The defense finished with 3 picks and held the Falcons to 70 rushing yards.
  • The Raiders (+2.5) took a hit to their playoff hopes with a Week 14 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts 44-27. The defense had no answers for the Colts offense, which scored on 7 of its first 8 possessions and finished with 212 rushing yards and no turnovers. It was such a pathetic defensive performance that Las Vegas fired defensive coordinator Paul Guenther after the game. On the bright side, Raiders QB Derek Carr threw for 316 yards with 2 TDs (and 2 picks), while WR Nelson Agholor tallied a game-high 100 receiving yards on 5 receptions.
  • With three weeks to go, the Raiders’ playoff chances are 15%.  They were above 50% before the Indy loss, according to Raiders Wire. Vegas is 1 game back of the Miami Dolphins (8-5), who currently hold the AFC’s final playoff spot, and 1 game back of the Baltimore Ravens (8-5), who lose a tiebreaker to Miami (conference win percentage). The Raiders can catch the Dolphins since they play in Las Vegas Week 16, but the Ravens should win out with three easy games remaining – vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, vs. New York Giants and at Cincinnati Bengals.
  • The Chargers have been eliminated from the playoff race.
  • The Raiders beat the Chargers 31-26 in a controversial ending as 1-point favorites in their first meeting this season Nov. 8. The host Chargers seemed to have scored a game-winning, 4-yard touchdown pass on the final play, but it was overturned after a replay review. Carr (165 passing yards) rallied the Raiders with 2 third-quarter TD passes after trailing 17-14 at the half, and Hebert finished with 326 passing yards with 2 TDs.
  • The Raiders are 7-3 in the last 10 of the head-to-head series, including a current 3-game win streak.

Betting stats:

  • ATS: Chargers 6-7 | Raiders 7-6
  • O/U: Chargers 7-6 | Raiders 9-3-1

Chargers at Raiders: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Raiders 37, Chargers 33

Money line (?)

PASS. The Raiders’ -175 price is just a tad high. We’ll focus on the spread.

Against the spread (?)

Back the RAIDERS -3 (-115). They face a must-win to basically keep their playoff hopes alive. The Chargers, who snapped a six-game ATS slide with their win against the Falcons, have nothing but pride to play for. If the line climbs to 3.5, this is a PASS.

Over/Under (?)

The OVER 53.5 (-115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. The Raiders defense is a mess, ranking 30th in the NFL by allowing 30.1 points per game (37.5 in the past four games). The Chargers defense isn’t much better, yielding 27.8 PPG to rank 26th. Look for Carr and Herbert to have big days in this shootout.
