Angels at Astros: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Jose Suarez vs. RHP Cristian Javier

Suarez made his season debut last week against the San Francisco Giants and allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings, which amounts to a 33.75 ERA.

  • Suarez didn’t strike out a single batter in his debut but allowed five hits and one home run.
  • Last season as a rookie, Suarez went 2-6 in 19 games (15 starts) with a 7.11 ERA.

Javier is 2-1 in six games (five starts) this season, pitching to a 3.55 ERA.

  • His ERA has remained low despite allowing six home runs, including two in 3 2/3 innings in his last outing.
  • The 23-year-old rookie has allowed more than three runs in just one outing this season and has struck out five batters in each of his last three starts.

Prediction

Astros 6, Angels 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Astros (-139) are once again heavy favorites over the Angels (+125) after crushing them 11-4 in Monday’s series opener. At -139, there’s not a ton of upside with a bet on the Astros, but this is once again a game they should win.

Even if Springer can’t go in the first game of the doubleheader, the Astros should come away with a victory Tuesday afternoon behind strong pitching from Javier. Once again, I’d PASS on the moneyline and bet the more profitable run line.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The ASTROS -1.5 (+140) off a much higher profit potential with a win by 2 or more runs. They covered the same spread easily last night and with Javier now on the bump at home, they should do the same in Tuesday’s first game.

Take the ASTROS -1.5 (+140) to win by at least two runs today. The risk is greater than a straight-up bet on the moneyline, but the reward is far better, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total went over last night with 15 runs being scored, and Tuesday’s Over/Under is set at 8 runs. The law of averages would suggest the Astros will come back down to earth with fewer runs scored today, but the bats should stay hot.

The total has gone Over in nine of the Angels’ last 12 games, partly because of their weak pitching staff. Bet the OVER 8 (+100) this afternoon.
