Looking into LSU football’s options at wide receiver without Ja’Marr Chase

LSU star receiver Ja’Marr Chase opted out of the 2020 season. Which players could move up the depth chart and earn a starting role in 2020?

3. The battle for the third spot on the depth chart.

The third receiver spot, the slot position, is up for grabs. Freshmen receivers Koy Moore and Kayshon Boutte will likely battle with Trey Palmer, Jaray Jenkins and a handful of other players for the starting role there.

Moore, who is 6’0″, 174-pounds, totaled 93 catches for 1,254 career yards and six receiving touchdowns at Archbishop Rummel High School. He was the No. 4 prospect in the state of Louisiana.

Boutte totaled 44 catches for 674 yards as a junior in high school and averaged 15.5 yards per reception. He left high school as the No. 1 receiver in the state of Louisiana.

Both freshmen have impressed the coaching staff so far, and one of them could end up being the Tigers’ third top receiver on the field this season.

While Moore and Boutte are likely to be outside receivers in the future, both players can earn more playing time this season with Chase opting out.

The case could be made for Moore, Boutte and Palmer to be the starter in the slot. Palmer has been talked about highly throughout the off-season, as have both freshmen players.

LSU kicks off their 2020 season on Sept. 26 against Mississippi State inTiger Stadium. Leading up to the game, the practices from here on out will determine which player starts in the slot position since the two outside receiver spots are most likely taken.

It will be interesting to keep an eye on the competition over the coming weeks as the season opener continues to get closer for the Tigers, who will be defending their 2019 College Football Playoff national championship.
