Details are everything in the NFL, and Drew Brees might appreciate that more than anyone else in the game. He’s minded the details to a surgical level in crafting a precise routine to condition his body for the rigors of a long season, while also logging long hours in film study to pick up tendencies and learn everything he can about his opponents and teammates.
But the New Orleans Saints are stepping up their efforts in 2020 with a very clean new helmet sticker. The team announced this tweak to its uniforms on Wednesday, sharing a close-up photograph of Brees rattling off a play call to his huddled teammates. There’s something elegant in its simplicity, reading “New Orleans” in the Saints’ custom font across the back of each helmet.
It’s a small thing, but it looks great. And these sort of tweaks aren’t new for the Saints. They’ve worn unique jersey patches and helmet stickers in recent years to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the franchise, as well as those honoring the lives of late owner Tom Benson and longtime captain Will Smith. Those are the sort of details that tend to hang around in fans’ memory for years to come.
