Look: Cam Akers is changing his jersey number from 23

Cam Akers is going back to the number he wore at Florida State.

Count Cam Akers among the large contingent of NFL players changing their jersey numbers this year. The second-year running back out of Florida State is making a switch, going back to the number he wore in college.

After initially eyeing a change when the league approved the new rule allowing single-digit numbers for running backs and select other position groups, Akers is officially changing to No. 3. As a rookie in 2020, he wore No. 23.

The Rams announced the news on Twitter Monday night, sharing photos of Akers wearing No. 3 throughout his younger years and into college. It also includes a photoshopped picture of Akers in his new jersey.

With Akers going to No. 3, that now leaves John Wolford needing a new number – for the second time this offseason. He already switched from No. 9 to 3 when Matthew Stafford arrived, and now the backup quarterback has to make another change.

The Rams’ website still lists him with No. 3, but that will need to be changed before the season begins.
