While LaMelo Ball’s destination in the NBA is not yet known, only a handful of teams will likely be in play by June. With only a handful of teams likely to be in contention for the top pick and Ball figuring to be one of the first names called on draft night, the options are limited.
The New York Knicks figure to be one of the teams potentially vying for Ball’s services. On top of being atop the draft lottery, currently holding the third-best odds at the No. 1 pick, the Knicks also have a big need for a lead guard.
The benefit Ball will also have is the advice and guidance of oldest brother Lonzo. If any player knows how to handle playing under heavy scrutiny, it’s Lonzo after his years in Los Angeles with the Lakers.
Following Ball’s game with the Pelicans against the Knicks on Friday, Lonzo was asked about how LaMelo may fit in New York under the constant scrutiny and the bright lights.
“I don’t think it’s going to bother him. He’s been in the spotlight since he was 15.”
LaMelo’s unique upbringing does lend itself to playing under the spotlights. Ball’s low key personality, similar to Lonzo’s, allows him to play without feeling pressure on him or at least outwardly showing that pressure.
If Ball lands in New York in June, it could be a perfect match for both parties and eventually lead to a long-term partnership between franchise and player.
