Lonzo Ball has shown improvements in his game across the board this season but one of the more underrated areas has been on his in-between game. Needing to become more of a scoring threat in pick-and-roll situations, Ball has worked on his mid-range game to be able to knock down shots in a variety of ways.
During shootaround ahead of Friday’s game against the New York Knicks, Ball talked about his decision to work on mid-range pull-ups and floaters during the summer.
“It’s just another way to score the ball, especially in the pick and roll. Trying to just to get more creative in how I can get points for the team.”
Last season with the Lakers, Ball attempted 20 runners and made just three, a percentage of 15%. This season, Ball has already attempted 17 floaters and made seven, a much better average of 41.2%.
Similarly, according to Cleaning the Glass, he’s shot 75 mid-range field goals this season compared to 73 all of last season. While he’s only shooting 28 percent on those shots, he’s shown much more comfort in attempting those shots this year compared to previous seasons.
It’s yet another sign of not only Ball’s growing confidence but his growing ability as well. He’s a player coming into his own this season and is finally starting to getting his footing in the league.
