Lonzo Ball finally confirmed news that had long been rumored in a profile on Thursday. In a piece on the Ball family for Sports Illustrated by Ben Pickman, Lonzo and LaVar both substantiated the report that the former was leaving Big Baller Brand and in search of a new deal.
Lonzo noted that he’ll always support Big Baller Brand because of its origins.
“BBB always has my support. It’s a family brand and I’m supportive as my dad keeps it going.”
Reiterating his stance on LaMelo joining Puma, LaVar was supportive of Lonzo’s decision.
“They’re always gonna be with BBB. But you can do other things too. You can go do some other apparel stuff. You can go do some other things, that’s fine. But you’ll always be related to BBB ‘cause that’s what me and my wife came up with for our boys.”
The news has been rumored since LaMelo abruptly joined Puma this fall. ESPN’s Nick DePaula reported then that Lonzo would be joining him in finding a new brand to sign with.
LaMelo’s deal with Puma was reportedly upwards of $100 million and included a potential signature shoe down the line. Lonzo could command a similar offer with some key differences. His ZO2 line was successful with Big Baller Brand and kept the company afloat single-handedly.
While the ZO2 line may be exclusive to Big Baller Brand, it’s proof that Ball can carry his own line with success. It’ll also be interesting to see which company he joins. Ball has been outspoken about Nike, and specifically Kobes, being his favorite shoe to wear. Puma could also seek out pairing the brothers together, which could be terrific if marketed correctly.
This also likely spells the end of Big Baller Brand. While the brand may attempt to live on past the days of LaMelo and Lonzo, without it’s two driving forces, it’s days are numbered.
