Mohamed Salah made a major declaration in his pre-Champions League press conference on Wednesday, saying he’s staying at Liverpool next season.
Salah’s future has been a big talking point this season as his contract with Liverpool gets set to enter its final season. Talks over an extension have ground to a halt, with fears that the Egypt star’s time at Anfield could soon be coming to an end.
Liverpool could opt to sell its star this summer in order to collect a transfer fee rather than risk seeing Salah walk away for nothing as a free agent next summer.
But in Salah’s mind at least, he won’t be going anywhere this summer and he’ll be left with two options: sign a new contract with Liverpool or walk away next summer.
“In my mind, I don’t focus on the contract. I don’t want to be selfish at all. I said two months ago it’s about the team. It’s an important week for us,” Salah said ahead of Saturday’s final against Real Madrid in Paris.
“I’m just focused on the team and winning the Champions League again. I want to see Hendo (Jordan Henderson) with the trophy in his hands and hopefully he gives it to me after! I don’t want to talk about the contract now, I’m staying next season for sure, that’s clear.”
Will Salah stay long term?
Salah turns 30 next month and is eyeing one final major contract, reportedly demanding upwards of £400,000 per week from Liverpool.
Though Salah has become one of the world’s top players, Liverpool could be hesitant to give him that kind of money because it could have a ripple effect on its other stars, who would then likely look to up their wages as well.
One of those players is Sadio Mane who, like Salah, will see his contract expire at the end of next season. The Senegal star has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and was less forthcoming about his future than Salah when asked on Wednesday.
“I’m going to answer after the Champions League,” Mane told Sky Sports.
