With the No. 34 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions selected Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta.
The Lions acquired the pick in Thursday night’s trade with the Arizona Cardinals, the one which netted the Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs. They turned that into LaPorta, making him the second tight end to be selected in the draft after Utah’s Dalton Kincaid went in the first round.
Interestingly, the Lions drafted LaPorta one spot before the Las Vegas Raiders tabbed Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer.
