Lions re-sign FB Jason Cabinda to a 2-year contract

Cabinda was set to be a restricted free agent

There is one less pending free agent from the Detroit Lions. The team locked up fullback Jason Cabinda to a new contract on Thursday.

It’s a two-year deal for Cabinda, the team’s starting fullback for the last two seasons. The 25-year-old was slated to be a restricted free agent, but the two sides reached an agreement that will keep the converted linebacker in Detroit through the 2023 season. Financial terms are not yet available.

Cabinda doesn’t touch the ball much on offense but has played a key role as a lead blocker in the run game, helping the Lions ground attack to its best outcome in 20 years in 2021. He was also the team’s 2021 nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year honor.
