With one of their recent pre-draft meetings, the Detroit Lions spent some time getting to know the man who set the NCAA record for sacks in a single season.
The Lions had a pre-draft visit with EDGE Caleb Murphy from Ferris State. The D-II standout bagged a college-record 25.5 sacks in 2022 for the national champion Bulldogs. Murphy acknowledged the meeting in an interview with Justin Melo from The Draft Network.
A 6-foot-3, 254-pound stand-up rusher, Murphy lit up D-II with 60 plays behind the line of scrimmage over the last two seasons. He also met with the Lions at the Shrine Bowl, where he held his own in team drills.
Having seen Murphy in person for both Ferris State and archrival Grand Valley State — he transferred three years ago to play with his younger brother — he reminds me of a bigger version of Detroit’s James Houston. While not as fast off the blocks, Murphy has the same speed-to-power type of game and is an exceptional finisher of pressures and run plays. Murphy projects as a 7th-round pick or a priority free agent.
