Lions loss to the Patriots ‘about as bad as it gets’ to Dan Campbell

Detroit head coach Dan Campbell believes his Lions “hit rock bottom” in Week 5 loss to the Patriots that was “as bad as it gets”

Any hopes of the Detroit Lions entering the bye week on a high note were quickly dashed on the New England turf in Week 5. Sunday’s 29-0 loss to the Patriots was a new low point for the Dan Campbell era of Lions football.

Detroit entered the game with the NFL’s No. 1 scoring offense but couldn’t manage a single point. An injury-ravaged defense played better than in recent weeks but still gave up seven scores to the Patriots and rookie QB Bailey Zappe, making his first career start.

After the debacle of a loss, Campbell was asked what he’d say to the players in the locker room as they prepare for the much-needed bye week.

“You be honest with them,” Campbell said. “To me, it’s about as bad as it gets. This is the worst. And this is where we’re at. And sometimes it’s going to get bad before it gets better.”

Campbell then nicely summed up the game,

“I believe we hit rock bottom. So now the only place to go is back up.”
