Lions loss, Texans win gives Detroit a big lead in quest for the No. 1 pick in 2022 NFL draft

If there is a silver lining to the Honolulu blues the Detroit Lions are making their fans sing with the mounting losses, it’s the status of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Sunday’s 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns dropped the Lions to 0-9-1 on the season.

With no other winless team, the Lions continue to charge towards the top overall pick. But another outcome on Sunday gave Detroit a little more breathing room in the quest for the worst record.

The Houston Texans stunned the AFC-leading Tennessee Titans, 22-13, in Nashville. It was Houston’s second win of the season, improving the Texans to 2-8. They had not won a game since beating Jacksonville in Week 1.

In fact, Houston’s unexpected win launched the Texans from the No. 2 spot to No. 4 overall. The Jaguars and Jets are also 2-8 but have a lower strength of schedule than the Texans. Detroit’s 1.5-game lead on those three teams with seven games to play is bolstered by the fact the Jets play both Jacksonville and Houston later this season, and the second meeting between the AFC South cellar-dwellers is also on the slate. Someone has to win those games…
