Lincoln Riley talks recruits visiting schools amid pandemic, says ‘we’re a ways away’

With home games against Tennessee and Oklahoma State slated, OU’s visitor weekends were sure to be loaded before the coronavirus pandemic.

With home games against Tennessee and Oklahoma State slated for the fall, Oklahoma’s visitor weekends were sure to be star-studded before the coronavirus pandemic.

The NCAA has had a mandated dead period with zero visits to schools since Feb. and has extended it through July 31. That includes coaches going on the road to evaluate and see recruits face-to-face.

Lincoln Riley held a conference call on zoom last Wednesday. He said visits for recruits are a long ways away and would be an extensive process if so.

“Do you quarantine recruits? Do you give recruits coronavirus tests? Do you potentially infect the whole team or staff and lose a game, or a season, to bring a recruit to campus? It seems kind of far-fetched,” Riley said. “In my opinion, I think we’re a ways away from having any recruit or family on campus. It’s not what you want it to be.

“Of course, everybody wants to get them to campus, but we’re all having to live in that reality right now, the schools, the parents, the players, the recruits.”

Oklahoma currently has seven commitments for the 2021 recruiting class and have already keyed in on multiple top recruits in the 2022 and even 2023 recruiting classes. As the Sooners continue to show improvement on defense and the offense continues to roll, recruiting would have sure seen to continue its uptick and visitors to campus would have been extremely important in battles against the elite of the elite in college football.

The NCAA has yet to announce anything in regards to recruits visiting schools for the 2021 football season.
