Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma assistant coach make statements amid George Floyd protests

Each and everyday has escalated a little further and a little further since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

Each and everyday has escalated a little further and a little further since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

Oklahoma football players have been vocal on Twitter over the death of Floyd, voicing their frustrations, asking people to listen to them and the reality of the times.

More and more head coaches and assistants have taken to social media to give statements over the current situation the United State is in. Oklahoma assistant Brian Odom was the first Oklahoma football staff member to make a statement.

Then Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley made a statement of his own late Saturday night, early Sunday morning.

“I ALWAYS stand with my players and I am thankful that I was raised in a home that taught me that no human, regardless of race, religion, or any other factor…should ever be treated differently…we have a long ways to go as a society- I am committed to being a part of the change,” Riley tweeted.

This isn’t uncharted waters for Riley. When he first arrived on campus in 2015, the Oklahoma SAE racist incident happened that spring. The University of Oklahoma has had multiple protests on its campus in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years after racial incidents.

Oklahoma football is scheduled to return to activities on July 1.
