Le’Veon Bell caused quite the stir on social media on Saturday, claiming he’d retire before playing for Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid again in an Instagram post. On Sunday evening, Bell sought to clarify his position on Reid in a series of tweets.
“I said what I said & I don’t regret at all what I said,” Bell wrote. “For those who have a PERSONAL PROBLEM with me because of what I SAID, that’s fine…you have your right! just understand I ALSO have MY RIGHT for how I feel about MY PERSONAL problem with dude because of what HE SAID to me.”
It seems pretty clear that Bell felt attacked on social media after his take on Reid, who is one of the more universally liked coaches in the league. Fans, current players, and former players came to bat for Reid after Bell’s original comment.
“Never did I say I didn’t enjoy my time in KC, because I loved my time there, and was probably the closest locker room full of players I ever been around,” Bell explained. “I enjoyed my teammates, the city, food, the fans, just about everything in KC.”
Bell sought to clarify that he enjoyed his half-season with the Chiefs as some interpreted his comment as displeasure in that. He continued to double down on his stance on Reid by apologizing, but only for making the comment publicly on social media.
“I’m not about to get all into depth on why I feel the way I do, but I have my right to feel the way I feel,” Bell continued. “The ONLY thing I would change is commenting how I really felt on social media… I’ll admit that’s somethin I could’ve and should’ve kept to myself & I apologize about that and that only… but I don’t regret what I said, because that’s how I feel.”
We’ll probably never know what was said between Bell and Reid. Maybe Reid told Bell something he didn’t want to hear. Perhaps he sold him a false bill of goods when he joined the team. Whatever the case, the damage is done here. Bell has really only dug himself a deeper hole to climb out of, especially if he has his eyes set on playing somewhere in 2021. His comment and the backlash don’t seem to phase him, though.
“So you can love me or hate me, I’m gonna be fine regardless,” Bell concluded. “I’m just giving you a small version from my point of view on why I said what I said …”
