With the need for a big and physical receiver becoming evident for the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, the team drafted Laviska Shenault Jr. in the second-round in hopes that he could add a new element to the offense. Though the pads haven’t gone on, he’s been as advertised performance wise, standing out in the Phase 2 part of training camp.
Early Sunday morning, Jags receivers coach Keenan McCardell got to share his thoughts with the media on Shenault before heading out to practice and compared him to two greats in terms of his ability after the catch.

Talk about high praise.
Andre Johnson is a player Jags fans should know all too well as he played for the Jags’ rivals in the Houston Texans after being drafted out of Miami. Not only should he probably be the first Texan enshrined in the Hall-of-Fame, but he’s someone who has 1,794 career yards and eight touchdowns against the Jags organization.
Anquan Boldin is another receiver Jags fans should remember as he played collegiate football at Florida State and is a native of Florida. He especially was a star during his time playing with the Arizona Cardinals, exiting his NFL career with 1,076 receptions for 13,779 receiving yards and 82 touchdowns.
As for McCardell’s relationship with Shenault, it all dates back to the Jags great’s time as a receivers coach for the University of Maryland. He tried to recruit Shenault to the Terrapins, however, Shenault ended up going to Colorado. Ultimately, things still worked out for both as they ended up being apart of the Jags’ organization together.
With his college career behind him, Shenault appears to be in good hands with McCardell who has done a good job coaching up young Jags receivers like Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Dede Westbrook, Keelan Cole, Allen Lazard, and D.J. Chark Jr. If he can stay healthy, Jags fans have to like Shenault’s chances to be successful under McCardell, which would be tremendous for the offense’s future overall.
