Later, haters. Cordarrelle Patterson has got Mitchell Trubisky’s back

It’s no secret that people love to rag on Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. It’s become the popular thing to do, especially nationally.

Trubisky deserves the criticism he’s received for his inconsistent play over the last three seasons, especially as the media never lets you forget that he was drafted ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

Trubisky doesn’t need anyone defending him. But it says a lot that his teammates continuously go to bat for him.

Bears receiver Cordarrelle Patterson doesn’t understand the hate that follows Trubisky — even now as the Bears are off to a 2-0 start for the first time in seven years. Patterson made it clear to the sports world that while they might be hating on Trubisky, it doesn’t matter because his teammates see the hard work and dedication he puts in.

“Mitch Trubisky is a different player,” Patterson said. “Hats off to him. We are 2-0 and people are still hating on him. It’s hard to get 2-0 in this league. Mitch keep grinding, if you hear this, just keep doing your thing dog because I got your back.”

Patterson isn’t the first to come to Trubisky’s defense. Several teammates have done so, including his 2017 draft maters Eddie Jackson and Tarik Cohen. Even Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Eric Ebron, Trubisky’s former teammate at North Carolina, had a message for the haters.

There’s been no doubt about Trubisky’s commitment, leadership and how his teammates rally around him. We’ve seen that over these last four years. The doubt remains in his ability to string together consistent performances, something that even in Year 4 he’s striving for.

But Trubisky is off to an encouraging start after two games, even if the box score doesn’t necessarily show the whole story. Which would certainly explain the fact that people believe that he hasn’t made any progress.

If you’ve watched Trubisky in these first two games, there’s noticeable improvement. In his decision-making, how he’s going through his progressions and the confidence he showcased extending plays with his feet in the pocket.

Is Trubisky where he needs to be? Absolutely not. He’d be the first to tell you that. But you can’t deny that he’s shown improvement in these first two games, even though the haters will try. And the hope is that he’ll continue to grow and show that he can be a consistent player in this year.

The only true way to shut the haters up is to go out there and keep winning, something the Bears will be looking to do when they face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
