Las Vegas Summer League: Lakers lose Game 2 to Knicks

The Los Angeles Lakers lost Game 2 to the New York Knicks in the Las Vegas Summer League games.

The Los Angeles Lakers faced the New York Knicks Wednesday in Game 2 of the Las Vegas Summer League.

New York led L.A., 40-33, at the end of the first half, but Los Angeles responded with a strong showing in the third quarter to regain the lead in the fourth.

However, the Knicks poured it on in the fourth quarter and made life difficult for Los Angeles’ best scorers, which made a last-second comeback too difficult. The Knicks moved to 2-0 after defeating L.A. (1-1), 91-82.

Los Angeles was led by Devontae Cacok and Vic Law in scoring; each dropped 14 points and both made 3-pointers, showcasing their range as big men. Joel Ayayi, one of L.A.’s two-way contracts, scored 11 points as a starter and had a much better outing than in Game 1 of Las Vegas.

Trevelin Queen added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting off the bench while Yoeli Childs chipped in nine points and five rebounds.

However, Austin Reaves, Mac McClung and Chaundee Brown had quiet games on offense.

Reaves went 1-of-8 overall for four points. McClung, who shot 2-of-9 in Game 1, shot 2-of-9 again for five points in this game, though his hustle on both ends was evident again.

Brown went 1-of-5 from the floor for two points, but his defensive prowess was on display. He even tore his shoe on one possession and needed a new pair.

The Knicks were led by second-year guard Immanuel Quickley’s 25 points and seven assists; Miles McBride, the 36th pick in 2021, also impressed with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Los Angeles next plays on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. PDT against the L.A. Clippers on NBA TV.
