Lakers’ Austin Reaves wants to be a sponge around Rondo, others

The Lakers rookie is taking full advantage of learning from the likes of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Rajon Rondo.

Austin Reaves over the summer expressed his excitement to play with LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers this season, and the rookie is taking full advantage of it.

Reaves during training camp and the preseason has had the opportunity to learn from the Lakers’ experienced core. He gets the chance to play with those individuals every practice, which has helped prepare him for the upcoming season.

He also singled out Rajon Rondo as one vet that helped him recently.

“I ask a lot of questions,” Reaves told Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet. “The other day, I asked Rondo something probably every five minutes. It is really just me being a sponge and learning. I got beat on two or three back cuts tonight, it’s just situations like that they’ll kinda coach me up and teach me situations how we gotta guard it.”

Reaves recorded 10 points, three assists and two steals for the Lakers on Tuesday in a loss to the Golden State Warriors. He is averaging eight points, two assists and 1.4 steals in five games with the Lakers this preseason on 42.9% shooting from 3-point range.

The Lakers converted Reaves’ two-way contract to a standard NBA deal, ensuring he will likely spend most of the season with the team versus the G League. His minutes could still be sporadic but the opportunity to learn from the Lakers’ veterans figures to help him immensely.
