Anytime an NBA superstar faces a former team, they’re bound to light up the scoreboard. Compound that with the game being on the national stage and on one of the biggest days on the NBA’s regular season schedule — Christmas Day — and you’re looking at an offensive explosion of epic proportions.
With the Brooklyn Nets facing the Celtics in Boston on Friday, Kyrie Irving was in this very position — and he did not disappoint. In 33 minutes of action, Brooklyn’s superstar point guard went off for a game-high 37 points against the Celtics on 13-for-21 shooting, draining 7 of his 10 3-point attempts and all four of his free throws to help lead the Nets to a 123-95 win on Christmas.
Irving achieved a franchise milestone with his 37 points, breaking the Nets’ record for points scored on Christmas Day — a mark previously held by Micheal Ray Richardson (36 points in 1984 vs. the New York Knicks).
Irving also logged eight assists, six rebounds and a steal in Brooklyn’s Christmas Day win.
