There has been no movement in any potential contract talks with Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. His agent, Erik Burkhardt, revealed in a strongly worded statement earlier in the offseason that he presented the team with an extension proposal that would reduce his salary cap hit this year and next year.
With no movement and the NFL draft fast approaching, that offer coming off the table.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, Burkhardt has told the team his open offer is being pulled. This situation has other teams monitoring the situation, although the Cardinals insist he will not be traded.
Murray has not requested a trade. He has said publicly he isn’t worried about his future with the Cardinals.
Murray will make about $5.5 million in salary and bonuses in 2022. He will likely make an average of around $40 million per year in a contract extension.
A few quarterbacks have gotten extensions this offseason and seem to push the market up in terms of price.
By reportedly pulling the offer Burkhardt gave, the message is likely that the price has gone up.
The longer the Cardinals wait, the more expensive that extension will become.
The earliest a quarterback entering his fourth season has gotten a contract extension is June (Carson Wentz). It isn’t even May.
This report isn’t anything to necessarily fear. The Cardinals have been consistent in saying they see Murray as their long-term franchise quarterback. Murray isn’t worried about his future.
This is just an agent trying to move the needle metaphorically and to continue to put public pressure on the front office.
With general manager Steve Keim and head coach Kliff Kingsbury both having gotten contract extensions this offseason, it seems like an inevitability that Murray will get his.
However, there is always the nuclear button Murray and his agent could go and request a trade before the draft in two weeks, and that is what has many fans in Arizona on edge for what is coming next.
