Kyler Murray aims to cut sacks down by half in 2020

He was sacked a league-leading 48 times as a rookie.

Last season as a rookie, quarterback Kyler Murray led the league in a category a player likely does not want to lead in. He was sacked 48 times, the most of any quarterback in the entire league.

Many of them came because he took too long to make a decision and ended up taking a sack or running out of downs behind the line of scrimmage.

He believes that number can come way down in 2020.

“I think we can cut that number down in half,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “That’s definitely the goal obviously is to limit the number of sacks and move around when I have to.”

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury mentioned all last season how Murray needed to do a better job of getting rid of negative plays. As the season progressed, he did, throwing the ball away more often.

Murray knows things will be better this season and how to do it.

“I think just being smarter with the ball, obviously, understanding what the defense is doing helps tremendously,” he said. ‘Understanding what the offensive line is doing now helps tremendously, and just seeing the defense for a whole. Having that maturity and growing in the offseason, watching film and stuff like that has helped me tremendously as well.”

If Murray and the offensive line cut the number of sacks that much, the offense should look great this season. And, if those 24 extra plays are completions two thirds of the time, that will lead to many more yards and more points.
