Kyle Shanahan: “We have moved on to Trey”

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stated the team is moving forward with Trey Lance.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the media at the opening of training camp, and provided a definitive statement on the quarterback situation, declaring “[w]e have moved on to Trey [Lance].”

All signs were in place for such a move. While Jimmy Garoppolo saw the majority of action for San Francisco last season, helping the 49ers to the NFC Championship game, the team has been looking to move the veteran quarterback this off-season as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

In limited snaps last year, including a pair of starts, Lance completed 57.7% of his passes for 603 yards and five touchdowns, along with seven interceptions. During his first NFL start, which came against the Arizona Cardinals, Lance showed flashes of his potential on plays like this one, as he extends the play before finding Deebo Samuel on the over route:

As for Garoppolo, the off-season game of “quarterback musical chairs” is drawing to a close. The veteran passer has been linked to a few teams this off-season, including the Seattle Seahawks and the Cleveland Browns. In recent weeks, the 49ers gave his agents permission to try and seek a trade.

Perhaps we see movement on that in the coming days.
