The 49ers weren’t likely to keep defensive coordinator Robert Saleh this offseason. He was a hot candidate in last year’s cycle and only helped his case during the 2020 campaign. Head coach Kyle Shanahan alluded often to hoping the team could keep their defensive coordinator, but always indicated he didn’t expect Saleh to be around in 2021.
Saleh was officially hired by the New York Jets on Wednesday after interviewing with six teams.
Shanahan and general manager John Lynch on Saturday both issued statements about the defensive coordinator who helped guide a defense that spearheaded their run to Super Bowl LIV.
Here’s Shanahan:
There is not much I haven’t already said about Robert’s abilities as a coach and as a leader. As a friend, I respect him greatly and could not be happier for him, Sanaa and their family. Robert helped to build a successful environment that has developed both players and coaches, and we are thankful for everything he brought to the 49ers these last four years. We wish him all the best.
Saleh was the only defensive coordinator to share a sideline with Shanahan since he became San Francisco’s head coach in 2017.
Here’s Lynch:
Robert is a great coach and an even better person. He’s a gifted leader who has earned the opportunity to direct a team in this League. His contributions to the 49ers over the last four years have helped us establish a culture and a standard that will continue to serve us well. We wish Robert, Sanaa and their entire family the best, and look forward to watching his future accomplishments.
The 49ers are set to promote linebackers coach DeMeco Ryans to replace Saleh.
