[autotag]Kyle Larson[/autotag] took the checkered flag in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway and was unsure if he won. Crew chief Cliff Daniels told Larson he didn’t win, but spotter Tyler Monn became incredibly excited as NASCAR said the No. 5 car crossed the stripe first. The driver of the No. 5 car beat Chris Buescher by 0.001 seconds, the closest Cup Series finish ever.
Following the event, Larson climbed from his car and talked about the finish at Kansas. The Hendrick Motorsports driver was excited as he came out on top in one of NASCAR’s most historical moments ever.
“I didn’t know if we won or not,” Larson said. “I was pumped for the finish. I can’t remember if it was [crew chief Cliff Daniels] or [Tyler Monn], my spotter, said that the 17 got it, and I was like, ‘Hey, good job today, team,’ because that was a great race. Then I got to about Turn 3 and Tyler was going crazy up on the roof. Just incredible, incredible finish there.”
The closest finish in NASCAR Cup Series history!
What. A. Race.

“I wish we had more mile-and-a-halfs. We all [expletive] about the package and all that, but these mile-and-a-halfs, these cars just race so amazing. Hats off to this whole 5 team, Hendrickcars.com, Chevy, JINYA Ramen Bar, Valvoline, everybody who’s a part of this. This is so cool. Month of May is going to be great for us, so hopefully this just starts some momentum.”
Larson will forever go down in NASCAR history as a Cup Series champion, but now he can add the “winner of the closest Cup Series race ever” to his resume. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has started May in a way that no one could have expected. Now, Larson will focus on Darlington Raceway before “The Double” comes into the picture soon.
