North Carolina went into Cameron Indoor Stadium and took care of business on Saturday night, sweeping the regular season series against Duke and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title outright.
But one moment during the game really stood out, and it wasn’t a good reason.
During the first half, Duke star Kyle Filipowski appeared to trip Harrison Ingram while down on the court. Ingram was attempting to get down the court to play defense and Filipowski stuck his leg out. There was no call nor a review as it was a ‘play on’ from the refs. While UNC eventually got the win and the last laugh, it’s a play that is being talked about and will be even more so this week.
After the game, Filipowski was asked about the play, offering up this answer:
“I’m not really too sure how that whole situation happened, to be honest,” Filipowski said. “I was really just getting up. My foot slipped. I don’t know how I caught him. That’s really all I’ve got.”
I don’t see him coming from anywhere,” he added. “I didn’t even know he was back with me. I thought I was the only one left.”
UNC head coach Hubert Davis tried to get the attention of the refs to review it but it was to no avail. After the game, Ingram was also asked about it as he responded that thought Filipowski tripped him but he was not sure as he had not seen the replay yet.
The two teams could meet again this season, but if it were to be next week it would be for the ACC Tournament Championship next Saturday in Washington D.C. There’s a chance they could meet in the NCAA Tournament, although that’s only happened once.
But for now, UNC has the last laugh and the win going back to Chapel Hill.
