Kirk Herbstreit says Penn State is a sleeper pick in 2022

Kirk Herbstreit’s sleeper pick in college football for 2022 will have Penn State fans roaring

The start of the new college football season is officially underway with three Big Ten teams helping to get a jump on the new year in Week 0. And with the start of a new season comes the debut of the top college football pregame show in the business, College GameDay from ESPN. While the crew will start hitting the road on a weekly basis to visit some of the biggest games of the year in Week 1, the gang got together to preview the Week 0 action and some big storylines to be paying attention to this fall.

Among the topics of conversation were sleeper picks to make some noise in the sport this fall. And after two mediocre seasons, Penn State was the sleeper pick of Kirk Herbstreit.

“I think Penn State has a team and some key spots with some leadership to bring it back and I think people are maybe underestimating Sean Clifford,” Herbstreit said when asked for his sleeper pick in college football this season. “I think Sean Clifford, when he’s healthy, can make plays so I think Penn State has a shot to be a sleeper.”

Penn State will kick off the new season on Thursday, September 1 at Purdue. Penn State has dominated the all-time series but is a slight road favorite for the start of the season against a Boilermakers team coming off a nine-win season in 2021.

Will Herbstreit look like a genius at the end of the season? It may be too early to tell without seeing the team in action, but it is good to know someone has Penn State on the radar for a potentially solid season this fall.
