Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will get huge props from his teammates for throwing down with Pittsburgh Steelers pass-rusher T.J. Watt during his team’s 41-10 win.
So says Kirk Herbstreit, who pointed out that other players on the Bengals roster will see how the franchise quarterback put up a fight and take notes:
“HUGE in the locker room when team reviews game film and sees your franchise QB fighting for his team. Can’t overstate how big this goes over in a locker room. Not surprised by Joe doing it either.”
That theme of not being surprised Joe did it wasn’t exclusive to Herbstreit, either.
Even Bengals head coach Zac Taylor pretty much said, yeah, that’s Joe during a Sunday night interview with MMQB’s Albert Breer:
“No, I think Joe thinks deep down he’s a linebacker. That’s what he thinks. And that’s kinda how he plays sometimes, and sometimes I gotta hold my breath when he plays that way. But that’s just the mentality he has. And he’s the son of a coach. He’s grown up around football, he’s grown up around being tough and then understanding what toughness is, how that can help you as a leader.”
It probably doesn’t hurt that Burrow shrugged it off during the game with a comment to Watt, which he then later revealed to reporters.
We’ve seen a few instances of Burrow taking unnecessary risks with his body this year and — for better or worse — had to chalk it up to Joe being Joe. He didn’t win the sparring match with Watt physically speaking, but he probably ends up winning it in more important ways.
