Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart did not exactly offer a glowing review of the Bulldogs following their first scrimmage of fall camp.
“I would not say that the first scrimmage wasn’t really up to the standard of our expectations,” said Smart. It is not shocking that the team is not sharp this early in camp. Georgia is still installing a lot of concepts and has numerous young players and transfers that are adjusting to UGA.
However, Kirby Smart continues to voice his concerns about the Bulldogs’ level of depth. “We’ve got a long way to go as a football team. We’re nowhere near to close to where we need to be,” Smart continued. Smart would not specify a specific position where depth concerns him with the media, but did note that depth is definitely an issue.
“I feel like we have less depth than we’ve ever had, and that’s kind of a common theme talking to other coaches I talk to,” noted Smart. “I call it the deterioration of football. Every year we’ve been here, I feel like we’ve had more players capable of going in and play winning football, and every year that (number) goes down. So, we have to keep working to increase that number.”
Fortunately for Georgia, the Bulldogs will have a few more weeks of fall camp to continue preparing for the Aug. 31 season opener against the Clemson Tigers in Atlanta.
Kirby Smart was not too down on the Bulldogs. “Good news is they have another chance this Saturday,” offered Smart.

Cornerback Joenel Aguero’s interception, wide receiver Jeremy Bell’s long reception from quarterback Gunnar Stockton, and Nate Frazier’s broken tackle were all highlights from Georgia’s first scrimmage of fall camp.
