Browns coach Kevin Stefanski isn’t interested in the budding cottage industry of covert ways to coach his team from afar when Cleveland visits Pittsburgh for Sunday night’s wild-card game. No secret signals, no illicit texts, no tapping into the tablets on the sidelines.
“I know what the rules are and I’ll follow them,” Stefanski responded when asked if he would try and communicate with his team during the game. Stefanski tested positive for COVID-19 and cannot have any direct contact with the team.
Stefanski said during his Wednesday press conference that he is unsure how he contracted the virus, but noted “we have not held in-person meetings in months”.
The coach acknowledged he would not ask the NFL to make an exception to allow him a direct line to the sidelines to aid his assistants, including special teams coach Mike Priefer, who will be the acting head coach in Stefanski’s absence. Stefanski did indicate that offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will call the plays from the sideline, something Stefanski typically handles during games.
