Kevin Stefanski: ‘I have to be a better coach’ despite winning coach of the year honor

Stefanski is driven to improve upon his very successful debut season

Kevin Stefanski won the NFL’s coach of the year honor in his first season at the helm of the Cleveland Browns. But Stefanski isn’t sitting back and resting on his laurels.

Stefanski made it clear in his press conference this week that he knows he needs to improve if the team is to find greater success in 2021.

“As we sit here in March, my focus and our focus as a staff and as a team is we have to get better,’’ Stefanski said Tuesday via Zoom. “We have to improve, and as coaches, really pull this thing apart and find ways to improve schematically. We have to evolve.”

He then pointed directly at the man in the mirror,

“I have to be a better coach next year for this team, and that’s my goal. We’re working really hard to find different ways for each of us to get better. That’s really the charge of what we’ve been working on the last few weeks. As we move forward in this offseason, we’ll see how it all shakes out and see what it looks like, but in the meantime, the focus is definitely we have to get better.”

It’s a refreshing dedication to driving forward in Cleveland, one of the reasons why Stefanski experienced so much success in his first year and why the ceiling is still well above the team’s division-round loss to the Chiefs.
