The idea of a balanced offense is something that you hear about frequently. Some believe a balanced offense is about running and passing the ball 50% of the time, but that’s not how it works.
Having true balance is making the defense have to defend both simultaneously and the offense keeping them guessing on what is coming next. Being able to both run and pass the ball successfully is key to having a great offense.
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell wants just that but wants to do it wisely. On her podcast, Mina Kimes spoke about his comments and mentioned a couple of key points that will help moving forward.
- The Vikings were 6th in pass rate on first down and 4th on second down
- They faced a significantly high rate of two-high coverage
Being able to attack those situations effectively will make things easier for the offense, hence the term wisely.
As a team, the Vikings only rushed for 4.1 yards per carry and couldn’t take advantage of those light boxes. The goal for 2023 is to be much more effective when they do run the football and be wiser in their opportunities to do so.
