Apparently, July 4 isn’t just known as American independence day to some NBA fans.
It was on that date in 2016 that Kevin Durant announced his intention to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Golden State Warriors as a free agent with a first-person article in The Players’ Tribune. Five years later to the day, the current Brooklyn Nets forward was surprised to find people still talking about it. He even wondered jokingly if the date was a “holiday” for some on Twitter.
It’s interesting how some players’ decisions in free agency are talked about years later. LeBron James’ “The Decision” became an hour-long ESPN special in 2010 — one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Apparently, Durant’s decicion to sign with the Warriors falls into that same unforgettable category for some.
Of course, Durant knew it was big news at the time. But to predict that observers would bring up the anniversary year after year is madness.

It’s pretty clear from Durant’s response that he’s looking forward —not back. It’s safe to say his current focus is on the Tokyo Olympics in a few weeks.
