In the first episode of “The ETCs with Kevin Durant” podcast, Kyrie Irving joked about the two joining forces to play together in Brooklyn, calling their partnership “one of the biggest surprise moves in NBA history. Nobody ever thought it would happen.”
Durant then added, “Yes, especially after the [2019] All-Star Game video where they caught us in the hallway. That’s when it was solidified that we were going somewhere. They didn’t know it for a fact where it was, but it was somewhere.”
Irving then asked, “do you want me to tell them how it really happened?” Eddie Gonzalez, Durant’s co-host on “The ETCs with Kevin Durant,” then stepped in stating, “I don’t want y’all to get fined for tampering, but I do want to hear the real story.”
Irving and Durant didn’t discuss that topic further.
Instead, Durant shifted the focus to the genesis of his and Irving’s relationship.
The two formally met through a contact at Nike. From there, Irving caught Durant’s attention when the Cleveland Cavaliers faced the Oklahoma City Thunder.
But Irving had been following Durant long before he caught his Nets teammate’s attention. He’s been following Durant since before the forward played at Texas, waiting for the chance to play with his friend in the NBA — which Irving should get when the 2020-21 season begins.
