Kevin Durant announces inaugural ‘Kevin Durant MLK Classic’ on Twitter

Kevin Durant won’t let his Achilles tendon injury stop him from making an impact on the basketball court, even if he himself isn’t playing.

Kevin Durant may not be participating in any off-court activity this season, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t ensure that the next generation of basketball stars do.

In case you haven’t noticed, Durant has been fairly quiet since his appearance on ESPN’s First Take last month. That was until Friday. The two-time NBA Finals MVP did his part to publicize the Kevin Durant MLK Classic, which is a high school basketball tournament that will feature some of the more well-renowned youngsters from Canadian and American high schools.

The teams expected to participate in the showcase include Norcross High School (Norcross, GA), Crestwood Prep (Toronto, Ontario), Hamilton Heights (Chattanooga, TN), Archbishop Carroll (Washington, DC), Bullis School (Potomac, MD) and Rock Creek Christian (Upper Marlboro, MD).

The full release, which Durant tweeted out from his Twitter account, states in pertinent part:

The KD MLK Classic, which will take place at The St. James from January 18 through January 20, 2020, will showcase match ups between some of North America’s elite high school basketball programs and players to provide these young student athletes with unique leadership, service and educational experiences in celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In many ways, the tournament is similar to the Kyrie Irving invitational which Irving hosted and attended in conjunction with Nike last December. Irving spoke about the importance of the event and about how enriching of an experience it was to help the game’s future generations get exposure.

It seems that Durant is following Irving’s lead yet again. This time in an extremely positive way.
