Kenny Pickett took a pounding at the hands of the Houston Texans on Sunday, getting sacked three times for 21 yards. The worst came via defensive end Jonathan Greenard on a questionable 4th-and-1 play. After scrambling, Pickett went down and didn’t come back up until he gingerly limped off the field. He exited late in the third and was ruled out with a knee injury.
Here’s what we know. Early word from Pro Football Talk‘s Mike Florio is that the team is hopeful the knee injury is minor. “Testing tomorrow. I’m told the team is hopeful it’s a minor MCL sprain, but they don’t know yet,” he said on Football Night in America.
There won’t likely be any official news until Mike Tomlin shares a vague update at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. The fact that he didn’t need carted off is a good sign.
But Pickett never should’ve been put in this situation in the first place. Instead of a simple quarterback sneak on a 4th-and-1 they desperately needed to convert, offensive coordinator Matt Canada opted for a pass play. There was no disguising it, though, as they went into shotgun instead of putting Pickett under center.
If Pickett can’t go this week, it’ll be the Mitch Trubisky Show versus the visiting 3-1 Baltimore Ravens.
