Steve Nash’s hiring as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday shocked the basketball world, to say the least.

It seemed like the Nets had only just begun the search for their next head coach with their official interview of Jacque Vaughn.

Although the Nets’ head coach in the Disney bubble didn’t win the job, he will remain in Brooklyn to work as Nash’s lead assistant coach.

As it turns out, retaining Vaughn was not only something Nets general manager Sean Marks wanted, but also a “requirement” for Nash.

“Extremely important, I love the continuity we have with Jacque staying in place,” Marks told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on The Woj Pod. “But I will say this: not only was it important to me but it was more important to Steve. This was one of Steve’s first, sort of, requirements of the job. … That was led just as much by Steve as myself.”
