When Kareem Jackson signed with the Denver Broncos in 2019, Joe Flacco was the team’s vet bridge option quarterback set for an eventual transition to newly-drafted then-rookie QB Drew Lock.
Broncos legend John Elway got his man [again]. Although the football cognoscenti weren’t sure if it was Flacco or Lock that’d get the Broncos back to the playoffs for the first time since hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy at the conclusion of the 2015 season, Peyton Manning’s last with the team. Kareem Jackson, however, was intrigued by the team’s roster, QB questions aside, and signed a three-year contract with the team.
During the life of the deal, Flacco turned out not to be the guy. Drew Lock wasn’t it. And Teddy Bridgewater was a respectable 7-7 in his lone season. But now the Broncos have Russell Wilson and the fifth-best odds to win the Super Bowl. As a free agent, with other options, it just made sense for Jackson to re-sign and enjoy the presumed highs after three seasons of lows.
“For me, [it was about] opportunity. I had a couple [of] different opportunities,” Jackson said Tuesday. “Coming back here made the most sense for me at this point in my career with everything that’s going on here — [trading for] Russell, the new coaching staff, the energy around here. It was kind of an easy decision.”
Jackson added, “I just wanted to finish things and possibly make a run for a Super Bowl.” The Broncos Super Bowl window is wide open with Wilson under center. The team’s next step is adding cost-effective, young rookies during Thursday’s NFL draft. Although the team doesn’t pick until Friday with the No. 64 overall pick in the second round.
