2K Games announced the cover athletes for NBA 2K22, and the Los Angeles Lakers will have a legend on a special edition.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played for the Lakers for 14 seasons, is one of three cover athletes to star on the 75th Anniversary Edition of the game. Joining Abdul-Jabbar are Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant and Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki.
The standard edition cover will have Mavericks star Luka Doncic as the sole athlete, and Doncic will also be the cover of the Cross-Gen Digital Bundle version.
“Being on the cover of NBA 2K22 is just a very special achievement for me,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “I’ve loved this game all my life and to be significant in the way that people who love the game and play on games, you know, to be in their world is a real honor.”

All editions of the game will be available to purchase on Sept. 10 and are available for preorder.
The standard edition will cost $59.99 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. It will be $69.99 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Cross-Gen Digital Bundle will cost $79.99 and gives players access to both the standard version on old consoles and the new version on current consoles.
The 75th Anniversary Edition will cost $99.99 for all platforms and will have dual-gen access included.
During his time in the NBA, Abdul-Jabbar cemented himself as a Hall of Famer. He won six championships and garnered six MVP awards. He’s also the all-time NBA scoring leader, so his spot on the cover is well warranted with the impact he had on the development of the sport.
Last year, 2K created a special Mamba Forever Edition to honor Lakers and NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who tragically passed away in Jan. 2020.
