Kansas fans derisively chanted “S-E-C” at Texas fans when the Jayhawks won in Austin

Kansas roasted the hell out of Texas en route to its first Big 12 win.

Seven years ago, Kansas Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold was beating programs like Waldorf and Macalester as the leader of Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater. On Saturday, he notched a win over Division I blue blood Texas.

In Austin.

In overtime.

As Jayhawk faithful, spurred by the promise of a team that beat South Dakota in Week 1 and no one else — though they did give Oklahoma a run — derisively chanted “S-E-C” at the Longhorns.

Texas is set to depart the Big 12, and any future showdowns with Kansas, for the Southeastern Conference in 2025. There’s plenty of time for UT to avenge this loss to a conference non-rival. It will not matter. Kansas will always have this:

It was Kansas’s first win over an FBS opponent since beating Texas Tech in 2019. It was not without drama.

An early 14-0 lead turned into a 14-14 tie as Steve Sarkisian’s team appeared to have righted its ship and at least hint toward its status as a 31-point favorite. Kansas didn’t see things that way; a pick-six capped an 85-second span that saw KU score 21 straight points and push a 35-14 lead to halftime.

The Jayhawks held a two-possession lead into the fourth quarter, but the Longhorns came charging back to pull within a touchdown late. All appeared to be lost when UT quarterback Casey Thompson threw an end zone interception trailing 49-42 with 1:10 to play, but Kansas went three-and-out in the ensuing drive. The punt that followed net 13 yards, and three plays and one touchdown later these two teams were set for overtime at 49-all.

Kansas won the toss, deferred, and watched as the Longhorns scored first. Then tailback Devin Neal bided his time, crashed into the end zone, and pressed the decision into Leipold’s hands in a 56-55 game. The veteran head coach — the winningest in University at Buffalo history in just six seasons there — opted for a do-or-die two-point conversion. 255 pound fullback Jared Casey made his risk worthwhile:

Boom. Kansas moves to 2-8. Texas adds a new memory to its wall of regret. The regents who hired Leipold earn their scotch. Jayhawk fans, alone on an island to start the evening, chant S-E-C to a quickly emptying Darrell K. Royal Stadium.
