Kamaru Usman moves to No. 1 in UFC pound-for-pound rankings after Jon Jones’ recent arrest

Kamaru Usman is now No. 1 after Jon Jones’ latest run-in with the law appears to have cost him the top spot.

[autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag]’ latest run-in with the law appears to have cost him the top spot in the official UFC pound-for-pound rankings.

Jones, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, was arrested this past Friday morning on two charges: misdemeanor battery domestic violence and felony injuring and tampering with a vehicle. His arrest occurred in Las Vegas just hours after he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame fight wing for his UFC 165 classic with Alexander Gustafsson.

Although neither fighter has recently competed, UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] (19-1 MMA, 14-0 UFC), who’s set to run things back with Colby Covington on Nov. 6 in the main event of UFC 268, has supplanted Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) at No. 1 on the UFC’s pound-for-pound lost, with Jones dropping to No. 2.

UFC president Dana White has said on numerous occasions in recent weeks that he believes Usman is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Usman, who claimed the 170-pound title from Tyron Woodley in March 2019, has defended his title four times with finishes of Covington, Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal.

Jones, who’s due in court on Oct. 26, has found himself tangled in numerous legal issues throughout his career, including a DWI charge, a hit-and-run incident, a battery charge, driving under the influence, and negligent use of a firearm. The 34-year-old told reporters on the Hall of Fame red carpet that he’s gearing up for his heavyweight debut in 2022 after not competing since a close decision win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020.
