Kadarius Toney left first Giants minicamp practice early

The start to Kadarius Toney’s New York Giants career got no less strange on Tuesday as he left his first minicamp practice early.

The curious start to the NFL career of New York Giants first-round draft pick Kadarius Toney continued during the team’s opening session at minicamp on Tuesday.

Toney was present at the minicamp, which is mandatory, but there were still questions on why he missed several of the teams’ voluntary OTAs the past several weeks.

“Kadarius was here through a portion of the period. Not all our players are on the field every day for one reason or another,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters before practice on Tuesday. “I would say in terms of the voluntary portion of the spring, I’m not going to comment on any attendance, who was or was not here across the board. That’s something I expressed to my team early in the process. We are going to work with every player we could virtually, in person, whoever was available to us. I think all of our guys have done a good job working getting to this point. I’m excited about working with everybody on the field today and excited to work with Kadarius on the field today, as well.”

Toney was seen on the field in his No. 89 jersey working with both the offense and special teamer returning punts. But he appeared to have some footing issues, the same ones that cut some this previous workouts short leaving observers wondering if its a footwear issue or perhaps an injury.

“Toney showed some impressive movement skills and explosiveness running with the backups as a slot receiver, but also slipped on multiple occasions throughout practice, the final slip sending him inside before the end of practice to get checked out,” wrote Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com. “It’s unclear if he’s hurt — the Giants don’t provide injury reports during the offseason — but it’s too early to determine if there should be any cause for concern… Either way, Toney hasn’t exactly had the best start to his career. Something to keep an eye on.”

Agree. It is something to keep and eye on. It could be something as simple as outfitting Toney with the proper footwear or it could be something deeper. If it was an injury, I doubt Toney would be out there working at the capacity he was. More to come on this.
