Justin Herbert is not only one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks; he’s now also one of the richest.
But in order for Herbert to start taking the Los Angeles Chargers where they want to go — playoff wins, Super Bowls, parades, etc., etc. — they have to start unleashing the quarterback’s rare downfield gifts. Fortunately, Herbert likely understands this better than anyone. At least, according to his testimonial post-Chargers practice on Wednesday.
While speaking to reporters, Herbert elaborated on one of his goals for 2023 that should be extremely obvious to any Chargers observer.
He wants the team to utilize his arm and weapons better for downfield passing. It’s been an issue for L.A. in the past, but Herbert (predictably) thinks it’s necessary for his team to take the next step.
Justin Herbert on his goals for 2023: "One of the things is just making sure we're throwing the ball down the field and making sure we're taking those shots. We've got those guys on the outside that are able to make those plays."

There is a method to Herbert’s madness (clear and rational logic).
Herbert’s 6.8 yards per pass attempt were 23rd in the NFL last season. Despite that, only eight quarterbacks completed more 20-plus-yard passes than Herbert’s 50. Now imagine if the Chargers and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore give Herbert the downfield shots he wants. Imagine the chaos that would ensue.
If the Chargers give Herbert what he wants, those numbers will skyrocket and should reflect in much more success for L.A. in the AFC standings.
