Retired New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman always wore No. 11 for the team, which was why it was surprising to see a new player get that number in such a short time after Edelman’s retirement.
New England added kicker Riley Patterson the practice squad and he has taken the No. 11 — the first player to don Edelman’s number since the receiver wore it. Patterson, for what it’s worth, had just two numbers to choose from 11 or 12. Kickers can only wear numbers between 1 and 19. All the others are taken. Tom Brady, of course, wore 12. So that might be an even bigger deal. Sorry, Julian. Patterson did what he could.
Even so, Edelman did not take the news well on Twitter.
